The Mother’s Prayer: Puta Mata Ki Asis

Every woman embodies the energy of the Kundalini Mata Shakti: The Creative Power of the Mother. When a woman decides to assist a soul in coming to the planet in human form, it is a tremendous responsibility. In Japji Sahib, Guru Nanak said that the human birth is very rare and very precious, for it is only in the human body that the Tenth Gate, the door of liberation, can be found. A soul can only incarnate into human form if it has earned that privilege in its previous births, and if it has been blessed with grace. So when a woman conceives a child, she becomes the channel of divine opportunity for a worthy and deserving soul; and she can use her creative power to awaken—her identity as Mata Shakti—to bless her own child through her prayer.
Because the mother is the first teacher, and those lessons begin in the womb, the consciousness of the mother is tremendously important. Every word a woman says during her pregnancy, every thought, every feeling, every experience provides the foundation, the vibration from which the body of the child is formed. It is natural for a woman to imagine what she wants and hopes for her child. That desire, good or bad, has an impact on the sensitive soul-consciousness that is meditating and developing in her womb. To help a woman hold the highest intention and prayer for her child, Guru Arjan, the fifth Sikh Master, composed the shabd, Puta Mata Ki Asis.
Remembering him, all sins are erased, and ones generations are saved.
So meditate continually on the Lord, Har Har; He has no end or limitation.
Oh child, this is your mother’s blessing, that you may never forget the Lord, Har Har, even for an instant.
May you ever vibrate the Lord of the Universe (Pause)
May the True Guru be kind to you, and may you love the Society of the Saints.
May the preservation of your honor by the Transcendent Lord be your clothing. And may the singing of His Praises be your food.
So drink in forever the Ambrosial Nectar. May you live long, may the meditative remembrance of the Lord give you infinite delight.
May joy and pleasure be yours. May your hopes be fulfilled, and may you never be troubled by worries.
Let this mind of yours be the bumble bee, and let the Lord’s feet be the lotus flower.
Says Servant Nanak, attach your mind to them, and blossom forth like the songbird, upon finding the raindrop.
This shabd embodies the purest prayer that a mother can wish for her child. Subconsciously, this shabd helps the woman and the child understand the purpose of their relationship to one another. The purpose of the mother is to serve and support the soul of the child so that it has a chance to attain liberation in this lifetime. The purpose of the child is to understand this chance and do her best to fulfill it. Any other relationship between the mother and child is maya, a worldly trap. If the relationship becomes one of ego and too much attachment, both the mother and the child create karma for themselves. If the relationship is one of projective prayer on the part of the mother for the highest spiritual destiny of her child; and if the child can receive that prayer and deliver it—both are liberated. Not only that, when a child reaches the state that is described in this shabd, seven generations before and after attain liberation as well. What higher hope and prayer can there be for one’s baby? This shabd talks about the beauty of a life spent devoted to meditation on the Divine. It talks of deep peace, love and happiness. As a mother vibrates, so the core identity of her child becomes. When this shabd is offered as a prayer, and sung without ego, attachment or desire, in total surrender to the Divine, especially while the child is preparing to come into the world, during pregnancy, it gives the soul of that child that much more of a chance to realize its destiny and become liberated—merging into the experience of oneness with the Divine. – Ek Ong Kaar Kaur Khalsa*
