A video which examines the legends and mythos of the legendary folklore hero, Robin Hood, otherwise also known as Red Robin. It's always good to hear the opinions of others and certainly no-one could argue that Robin Hood is possibly on of the most celebrated outlaws in history.

Well, let's see...what makes the hero, an outlaw, then?

As with other former Pagan Divinities in Britain, things changed over time in the perceptions and consciousness of people as the original legends were re-told by the early Monks, to impart a Christian flavour to the tales and thus, they are preserved, but not entirely accurate.

Red Robin of the Hood, was the God of Nature long before medieval times, and his true character shows through even nowadays, taking the Hidden, Forbidden and Concealed jewels from the obscenely rich and giving to the poor ~ always seeking to restore the essential balance

'The Robin Hood story was spread, the tale of the wonderful archer who never missed his aim.

Robin was a common French-English name for a spirit,

and Hood was a frequent variant for Wood,

and has therefore been derived from the Scandinavian Hod, a wind god, variant of Woden.

Robin Hood, therefore, though he probably had a historical existence also,

was a mythical form into which a witch leader could easily transform

...He had his coven of twelve, including the High Priestess, Maid Marian,

all dressed in Lincoln Green"

-Gerald Gardner; 'Witchcraft Today' Arrow Edition(1966) The Anchor Press (Ltd.)Publishers. Essex, Great Britain

So there is the answer to the question : Who was the real Robin Hood?

The Horned God of the Forest, living on in fable and myth ~ always opposed to the corrupted clergy and their rich masters, who have the Pearls and Jewels restricted and enjoy exclusive access to these- so Robin always stands up for the rights of the people.  His faithful merry men becoming outlaws in order to live by Pagan Ways in later years when the Church took control of Britain..

The Green Man of the forest may well be Robin Hood, or so a good friend told me. I feel that Friar Tuck was a later addition  to the tales of Robin and his band of fellow outlaws. When Christianity took over in Britain, Pagans were faced with a choice- either submit and become a Christian, or basically be disenfranchised and cast out from society. Many would pretend to be converts to the new religion and yet practised Pagan ways in secret.

Maid Marion has always intrigued me - she suggests a Goddess devotee wishing to reunite with the Horned One and renounce the evil ways of the sheriff and the Church.

If anyone knows more I would be very interested :)

I've never really considered the Mythological implications of the Robin Hood story, but its about time I do so.

Need to watch this documentary and mull the ideas over and I will be back with more detailed comments.

Thanks for sharing Zephonith!
