Needed:

• A length of string that won’t fray
• Plenty of beads that can fit on the string
• A bag or pouch
• A pink or white candle and something to carve a symbol into it

Cast a circle. Carve Mannaz, the rune for the self, on the candle and light it. If the beads are not already in the bag, put them in now. Place the bag of beads and the string at the base of the candle or hold it up to the flame (but not too close). Visualize the candle’s light filling both the string and the bag of beads with light. Imagine them glowing and humming with energy. Speak the following words:

These tools will help me gain more self-esteem and self-respect

I’ll put beads on this string, and more and more it will collect

And as it does, I’ll quickly see the beads in numbers grow

I’ll watch their length grow longer and more self-esteem I’ll know

Tie a knot or two on one end of the string, leaving a few inches before the knot. Be sure that you knot it enough so that the beads won’t slip off. Think something positive about yourself and string the first bead on. Say:

With this first bead it has begun

I’ll string them on, one by one

‘Til the string is full and it is done

Put the string in the bag with the beads and close your circle. You can let the candle burn down if you wish. Keep the bag with you at all times. Whenever you do something you are proud of, receive a compliment, think or say something positive about yourself, or generally feel good about yourself, put a bead on the string. Find some way to secure the unknotted end of the string so that the beads don’t slip off. An easy way to do this is to loop the string back through the last bead strung on, so that it goes through the bead twice and holds it in place. When the string is completely full, tie off the other end. You can turn this string of beads into a necklace or bracelet, carry it as a charm, or keep it somewhere safe but visible. Whichever way you do it, remember that each bead is something good about yourself and keep the string of beads as a reminder of your worth.
