I recently watched a video about fractals on Youtube called Fractals: Hunting the Hidden Dimension. It was a NOVA series, I believe, and it was absolutely fascinating. If you enjoy watching Pixar animation films you can thank fractals for the pleasure. A guy named Carpenter working for Boeing wanted to make a more realistic flight simulation with detailed mountains and landscapes, but couldn't figure out how. He read a book about fractals written by Benoit Mandelbrot, a mathematician who had worked for IBM. Mandelbrot's book on fractals inspired Carpenter to utilize the concept of fractals in his computer program. From that experiment, we gained computer animation, which led to Carpenter's career switch. He left Boeing for Lucasfilms. His computer animation was used for the first time in the Star Trek movie, The Wrath of Khan. Later he founded Pixar and the rest is fractal animation history. :)
