It is a joyous day in the world of fashion, as international luxury mega-brand, Gucci, announced they will be going fur-free! This exciting news has come to pass thanks to the help of animal groups such as Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), LAV, and Fur Free Alliance (FFA).

In a talk at The London College of Fashion on October 11, 2017, Gucci’s President & CEO, Marco Bizzarri said: “Being socially responsible is one of Gucci’s core values, and we will continue to strive to do better for the environment and animals. With the help of HSUS and LAV, Gucci is excited to take this next step and hopes it will help inspire innovation and raise awareness, changing the luxury fashion industry for the better.”

Gucci’s first fur-free lines will be their Spring-Summer 2018 collections. Not only have they taken a stance against animal cruelty in the fashion industry, but they see the change from an economic standpoint as well. With fur increasingly becoming a major faux pas in enlightened social scenes, particularly in the millennial generation that make up over half of Gucci’s clientele base, banning the use of fur is expected to actually increase sales.

Gucci’s creative director, Alessandro Michele, made the decision for the brand to go fur-free. He stated: “Fashion has always been about trends and emotions and anticipating the wishes and desires of consumers…[The best creative directors] are able to anticipate, to smell something outside before anybody else. Fashion and modernity go together.”

Gucci joins several other high-end fashion labels in the fur-free movement, including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, HUGO BOSS, Armani, Vivienne Westwood, and Tommy Hilfiger. Although this is a huge step in the right direction toward a brighter, more humane future for fashion, we hope Gucci and other fashion labels take the lead from brands like Stella McCartney, which is an all-vegan brand, and ditch other animal-derived products like leather and wool as well.
