Comment by Alannah on September 26, 2012 at 3:40pm This is the acoustic, solo stripped down version, the original having been done on the "Songs For The Dying" album which featured all music being set to poems of Dylan Thomas and an orchestra and choir. Ive always loved the solo acoustic version better than the orchestral version, not that the orchestral version isn't good, its sumptiously beautiful, but I love hearing songs done to the barebones, and I love Cale's acoustic work anyway.
The Dylan Thomas poem is exquisite, as is much of Thomas's work. It was written for his father dying with Thomas pleading with his father not to go gentle into that final sleep but pleading with him to "rage aganst the dying of the light". Deeply moving I think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_Not_Go_Gentle_Into_That_Good_Night
The original one is here love, and you can compare and contrast it with the above one -
