The early hours of Thursday morning found us trudging through wet fields in Avebury approaching the stones. Although there were people in robes I did not find the group who had posted Avebury Summer Solstice on Facebook as an event. Everyone seemed to be doing their own thing as the sun rose, behind heavy cloud. It was as we exited the gate to return to our car that we decided instead to right and go into another field. By a stone there we found a welcoming group of pagans, laughing and telling jokes as well as welcoming the dawn. There was a strong and friendly energy in that place. We left for our journey on to Hastings somewhat wet but happier for the experience. We now plan on returning on a sunnier day at an hour when shops are open and the villagers awake. Watch out Avebury, you're getting a return of Druids.
