Carolyn Lown said… He was a consummate politician & did convert, but he still held on to his Pagan beliefs. The fact that his burial was Pagan has been lately attributed to his wife who looks like the half of the relationship that remained totally Pagan.
Mind you,who knows?I don't think they left written documentation & it's all surmise etc.
You should look up Sutton Hoo on Google or Wiki.Loads of the finds are in the British Museum, although they were supposed to have been returned to Suffolk after a loan period.Conveniently WWII got in the way & the finds were kept by the British Museum for safety & are still there!!!
Carolyn Lown said… Hi,Stuart, good spelling of the name by the way, from my Scottish homeland, lol.
You've never heard of Sutton Hoo?One of the major archaeological sites on British soil.
It was the site of a ship burial of an Anglo Saxon king. The jury is out as to his religious affiliation,he was of the time when there were many conversions to Christianity but with reservations, they would pick & choose which bits they would adhere to.
Raedwald, the King buried at Sutton Hoo,so they think, seemed to tread a fine line between Paganism & Christianity. It's a great place, just 15 minutes from where I live in the most Eastern outposts of the country.I belong to an Anglo Saxon re-enacment group that gets to regularly camp in the area & we portray a community tied to Raedwald through family links, all based within a 10 mile radius of the burial site.We have 2 very good storytellers in the group, hence the great verbal links to the great man, lol!!

Well met and have a wonderful rest of the week, and a good weekend when it catches up with you!
