Do you have a favorite pose? If you don't have one you like the best, what about the one you use most often?
It's hard for me to pick a favorite, I like the more meditative poses, I forget the traditional names, it's been too long since I practiced. But the child pose and the death pose. Not just because I have chronic fatigue! ;)
The one I do most often is probably the cobra... it feels sooooo good to me. I think it's what I'd have to pick...

LOL That presupposes that one enjoys doing that particular one. When I was younger I had a couple that I liked to do because they were hard to accomplish: The headstand and the crow pose. The one I find myself doing most often these days is a series called The Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar). It's not too extreme, but it gets me moving and I enjoy greeting the Solar Lord this way.

Permalink Reply by JC Nolan on August 19, 2011 at 6:40pm (Grins... couldn't resist). This one showed up in my practice about a decade ago (in it's first incarnation) and has been evolving over time. The pose is actually a lot easier than it looks as a lot of it is just physics. I named it Upivistha Salambhasana (upward flying locust) and learned about 6 months ago that it is considered a variation of salambhasana and that the "full expression" of the pose actually has your chest on the ground as well... Oh well, always somewhere else to evolve toward!

Permalink Reply by Leila Raven on August 27, 2011 at 2:07pm That makes total sense that it would change over time and context. I used to enjoy much more challenging and energetic poses. Now that I am exercise intolerant medically.. in other words exerting myself instead of being good for my health is now bad for my health, and makes me more ill, I enjoy the poses that are physically non-challenging but encouraging of deep muscular relaxation and bringing myself into a resting state.
I do have more ability and energy in my upper body, and that combined with ongoing tension in the neck, back and spine, that with the fact that it allows me to be fully reclined is what has me favouring the cobra right now.
As a little girl when I practiced yoga with my mother in the living room with the television instructor, I remember my very first 'favourite' pose. I don't know the name, but you would lay on your back, and then swing your legs over your head and put a knee on either side of your head.
Yoga taught me to believe that my body could do things beyond my current expectations if I gave it a chance. It also taught me that a little exploration and movement and reflection can literally change your whole perspective.
