Comment by Shalea Amara on February 16, 2013 at 12:17am Actually, there is only one documented wolf in all of California...OR7. He came down from his Oregon pack back in 2011 first, then returned to Oregon and is now back down here. It's believed he's seeking a mate, which well...good luck here to him. I reside in N. Cali and the general consensus here is one of conservation and protection for the wolf. Right now, any wolf entering CA is protected as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.
I'm not sure about OR, though. I do know that the wolf is currently being heavily hunted throughout Idaho (hunting season closed yet?) and Montana. And the MT governor just approved a no-buffer zone around Yellowstone, the use of electronic call devices, and so on. This was a comment to an article in the Billings Gazette about the war on wolves in MT and it totally sickens me:
"I actually prefer varmint hunting and haven’t shot a deer in years. But coyote hunting, that’s a different story. They willactually run to an electronic call. I have had 5 at a time on a dead run to get to the wounded cotton tail first. That’s when I take the trusty AR-15 and start cleaning house. I imagine that the wolf will be the same. The coyote hide isn’t worth very much so I usually don’t even pick them up, but now the wolf hide at $600, that’s a different story. I have you and the people like you to thank for that pleasure. Thanks Richard."
Thank you, Lady Julia, for the link to the blog. I have it bookmarked, but regrettably haven't checked it out lately.
Comment by Lady Julia on February 15, 2013 at 7:18pm @Shalea Amara, it's true in Oregon and Northern CA as well. I've been watching closely on this site. Check it out. http://www.defendersblog.org/2013/02/wolf-weekly-wrap-up-112/#t
Comment by Shalea Amara on February 8, 2013 at 12:40pm Greetings everyone! I'm happy to become a member of this group and to read everyone's posts. I noticed the infographic posted below on Yellowstone National Park and see that it has the grey wolf listed as endangered. I'm not sure how recent the infographic was put together, but sadly, it seems things have gone from bad to worse for the wolves in MT. They've just extended the hunting season on wolves there and are pushing through a bill that will allow electronic call devices for hunters, as well as a few other terrible advantages over the wolves. It almost seems they won't be happy until the wolf is gone altogether. :(
