In this day and age, we consider those who see and hear things that others do not, to be insane. However in different times and places, these same individuals might have been revered as spiritual leaders in their communities. It's a known fact that many individuals with schizophrenia and other mental illness have far above average intelligence and part of their illness is thought to be part of suffering from a so called 'over-active' brain, too much brain power. Is there a fine line between madness and genius? Is it simply in our subjective perception? This group does not have any discussions yet.

Comment by Leila Raven on January 25, 2012 at 10:11am Hey Ismael, I saw you in the Depression group too, welcome. :) I think a lot of people have more than one 'diagnoses'.. we seem to live in a 'diagnostic' era!
Don't let the 'labels' get you down!.

Comment by Daniel ☯ AloeMantis on April 6, 2011 at 11:14am Unfortunately schizophrenia has a history in my bloodline, and something a few mediums and palm readers (lol whatever) have said could come out in old age. Some of the problems I’ve grown up with were more around forms of Autism (PDD / ADD) as a solitary and over-imaginative kid dreaming of other worlds and alien messages for earth, which I can talk all about with passion, but even now can’t explain where the information comes from. I wonder how much the psychologists got from our chats, if anything.
My interests in geometric shapes can be seen as either intuitive or just a form of obsessive disorder, and it really doesn’t matter to me. I say good madness is worth listening to if it helps us rise to a better understanding, and usually the labelled ‘crazies’ are shut away because their ideas challenge the structure of the psychical world and beliefs we’re raised by.
Life is always a challenge to push passed our problems. Even now I still have a bit of the excitability and speech fails, and it takes awhile to prove myself when those screw up first impressions of me. Living with sceptics is easy, because why care what they think? Living with psychic readers is the hard part; I always have to prove to them that I’m not afraid to speak my faith, but also not too bold to admit I may be somewhat schizophrenic.
I really think schizophrenia and the hallucinations of other people in the room is something that needs more open attention, rather than being just a part of the condition. I’m sure in many cases these figures are actual people there in spirit. Bipolar just might be the closest form of higher understanding there is.
