We are unable to prove anything,since any proof rests on assumptions which must themselves be proved.But this latter proof will itself rest on assumptions,and so on indefinitely.All dogmatic philosophy is accordingly out of the question:for either side in a question equally good-or equally bad-reasons can be adducedSo is the universe wise and rational?It must first be proven to be animate,and this has not been prove.If the universe is a designed product or not,if designed there must be a designer or if undesigned a product of natural forces.
